Retail Studies Program Activities

The RSSA sponsors numerous student activities that heighten the awareness of students in the retail studies program and in the university. In doing so, more students become aware that retailing involves more than the traditional aspect of buying and selling. Successful retailers carry out current business practices in advertising, marketing, finance, distribution, production, etc.

RSSA student activities:

  • Speakers from Retail Industry
During retail weeks, various speakers from the industry visit the classroom and talk about a specified subject in the retail context. Speakers have talked about issues on advertising, marketing, production, information systems, international business, etc. Students are encouraged to either attend the class or join the speaker for lunch. In doing so, students have the opportunity to meet successful retailers from different companies and positions.

  • Roundtable Discussion with RMI Board Members
Once a year, students have the opportunity to meet RMI's Board Members, who consist of senior-most executives in the retail industry. Usually, there is a guest speaker that talks about a current retailing topic. Last year, the Roundtable Discussion was held at the corporate office of Williams-Sonoma in San Francisco. The founder of The Gap, Inc., Mr. Donald Fisher, spoke about his international experience that was sponsored by a major magazine. Students, RMI faculty and staff attend this "once-in-a-lifetime" event.

  • Mock Interviews and Resume Workshops
In order to prepare the juniors for their summer internship, RSSA sponsors   mock interviews and resume workshop. The seniors usually give the juniors the "do's and don'ts" of the interviewing process through mock interviews. Resume workshop helps students create a resume that grabs the readers attention.

  • Field Trips to Retailers in San Francisco
The program allows students to do numerous events, depending upon how many things RSSA wants to sponsor. Last year, RSSA organized a field trip to visit Levi Strauss headquarters and production center. Many students found the trip worthwhile and informative.

  • Class and Mentor Events
From time to time, each class organize an event where the class can gather together as a group and discuss what's on their mind: from summer internships to interviewing. This gives the students a chance to catch up on things. Mentor events enable upperclassmen to mentor another student in the program.

  • Quarterly Meeting and Dinner (three per school year)
Members of the program gather together and discuss upcoming events in the quarter. The director, assistant director, and retail studies faculty join students.

  • Recruiting BBQ
The purpose of this event is to encourage freshman and sophomores to join the program. The BBQ occurs early in the Fall quarter to achieve awareness of the retail management institute. Current members are encouraged to bring a prospective to the event. RMI brochures and application to the program can be obtained at the Fall BBQ.

  • RSSA Executive Board
This board enables students in the program to hold leadership positions during the course of the school year. Leadership positions include president, vice-president, secretary, and eight committee chairs: retail weeks, fundraising, newsletter, public relations, publicity, campus events, mentor program, and class representatives. The RSSA Executive Board has about 18-20 members per school year.

  • Christmas Gift Giving
This is definitely one of the best RSSA sponsored events of the year. The Christmas Gift Giving is RMI's way of giving back to the community. The program donates $300 worth of toys for needy kids. The students are asked to bring a toy to the event, where we all wrap the gifts. Toys, food, drinks, Christmas music, and the spirit of Christmas are the ingredients of Christmas Gift Giving.

  • Fundraising Event
Every year, RSSA is responsible to raise funds for sponsored events. Usually, a spring raffle is held. This year, RSSA raffled off a mountain bike, TV and VCR, a JVC stereo, Oak CD Holders, and various certificates from retailers.

  • End-of-the-Year BBQ
As a farewell to the Senior Class, the RSSA gathers for the final time of the school year. The BBQ is just a fun way of ending the year among students in the retail program.
